Five Things to Know Today, August 31
Anniversary of an earthquake, Latin rhythms nearby, lovely summer weather, and more
Hump Day happiness to all. Learn a few new things:
The weather: This is actually bearable: high of 91, low of 69.
Later this morning on Stone Mountain Patch: Check out the crime stats in the City of Stone Mountain.
Sign ordinance: Speaking of Stone Mountain, the City Council will meet to talk about the sign ordinance tonight at 6 pm at the courthouse, 922 Main Street. If youβre planning to attend and stay for the whole discussion, you might want to get some rest beforehand; it could be a long one.
Latin rhythms: Tap your foot and swing your hips to the music of Luis Stefanell, who will bring his Latin American percussion -- including conga, bongo, timbale drums, Native American flutes and world percussion instruments -- to the Decatur library today from 7-8 pm. Stefanell has worked with Peabo Bryson, George Clinton, Freddy Cole and Curtis Mayfield.
Today in Georgia history: On this day in 1886, parts of Georgia felt the earth move as a huge earthquake, whose epicenter is near Charleston, South Carolina, cracked the Tybee Lighthouse, moving the lens an inch and a half to the northeast (thanks Georgia History Timeline). The tremor we felt in Georgia recently is quite tame in comparison!
