Dinner and a Movie: "Hansel and Gretel"

The Rated R movie is playing at Mall at Stonecrest.

The Hansel and Gretel story, with the F-word and high-powered weaponry?

Apparently, the new "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" isn't quite the German bedtime fairy tale you may be used to.

The rated R "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters" plays at AMC Stonecrest 16 today (Saturday, Jan. 26) at 10:30 a.m., 3:40 p.m., 8:50 p.m.; in 3D at 1:05 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.; and in Imax 3D at 11:30 a.m., 2:05 p.m. 4:40 p.m., 7:15 p.m., and 9:50 p.m.

Here's what movie critic Roger Moore of McClatchy Newspapers, said about "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters":

High concept pitch or no, the movie doesn't really work. They were shooting for sort of a witch-hunting "Zombieland," an F-bomb-riddled "Van Helsing" packed with comical anachronisms — a Bavarian forest past with witch trials, pump shotguns and primitive stun guns, where bottles of milk have woodcut pictures of missing children on the labels. -

Moore also writes:

Writer-director Tommy Wirkola focuses on the fights, and flings all manner of viscera at the 3-D camera as limbs are whacked off and heads and torsos explode. Less attention was paid to the story, and the dialogue is a tad over-reliant on the random F-word to land a laugh.

After-movie dinner suggestion: Continue the German theme with dinner at The Village Corner German Restaurant, whose sweet treats can best anything a fairy tale witch's candy house can serve up.
