Rainbow Park Baptist Church offers Adult Literacy Program with FREE GED Ready Classes
100% GED Test Passing Rate
Decatur, GA, (March 29, 2012): Many people in the City of Atlanta and Decatur are unaware of the diamond in the rough that is available to them. The Rainbow Park Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Steven N. Dial, Sr. offers FREE GED classes to individuals living within the City of Decatur and the Metro Atlanta area. The church’s Literacy Mission Ministry led by Mrs. Sandra Ferguson is committed to educating and empowering children, youth and adults to gain and improve academic success through literacy education, and assist the community in providing citizenship classes to non legal individuals and families. “Churches are supposed to be a place of help and comfort for a community. We at Rainbow Park feel blessed and honored to take on the challenge of providing the means by which any needy individual can have the opportunity to gain the knowledge they need to reach their highest potential,” said Mrs. Ferguson.
In 2008 the Literacy Missions Ministry was formed by the vision of Pastor Steven N. Dial, Sr. Rainbow Park Baptist Church became a Community Based Organization under the Dekalb Council on Literacy, Certified under the North American Mission Board (NAMB) for Tutoring Adult, Youth & Children site (TCY) and then opened up their FREE GED Ready School. In 2009 they moved the facility to the main church to accommodate the growing class sizes. Rainbow Park Baptist Church was awarded the “Best Community Based Organization of the Year” that same year by the Dekalb Council on Literacy. In 2009 they also began providing a Thursday night fellowship meal weekly at no cost to the students. In 2010, the Reverend Clifton Dial, Sr. Scholarship Foundation was established to provide FREE scholarships to deserving students seeking their GED and hosted the 1stAnnual Reverend Clifton Dial, Sr. GED Golf Tournament where all of the proceeds go to support the scholarship foundation. In 2011, Pastor Dial was awarded the “Barbara Loar Community service Award” and Rainbow Park Baptist Church was selected to be the Community Based Organization Model for the County of Dekalb. Over 2,000 students have matriculated through the FREE GED and adult literacy program at Rainbow Park. Everyone who successfully completed the program has passed the GED Test with flying colors.
The classes that are currently offered are Basic Math, Algebra, Geometry, Science, Social Studies, Language Reading and Language Writing. They also offer Adult Basic Education in Reading and Math. All students are required to take the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) so that the Literacy Ministry can assess where they need the most assistance. Once they complete the program, they can participate in a formal cap and gown graduation which is held every May or June at Georgia Piedmont College (formerly Dekalb Technical College) once they meet the requirements for obtaining their GED diploma.
“It has always been my vision to enrich our community by providing them with the opportunity to grow spiritually, emotionally, physically and academically,” said Pastor Steven N. Dial, Sr.
Classes are held quarterly, Monday and Thursday Evening from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Day and online GED Classes will become available in the summer of 2012. ESL and Citizenship Classes will be offered in the summer of 2012 as well.
