Local Student Heads to Carnegie Hall in New York
The following is from a press release from DuMarkus Davis:
Local student, DuMarkus Davis, an aspiring Concert Violinist, is a 17 year old Atlanta native who first
encountered the violin at the age of 12 and immediately became one with his instrument. After a year
of playing, DuMarkus was named assistant concert master of the Clayton County Honor Orchestra
and has continued on this path of achievement since. In September of 2011, DuMarkus was named
one of two violinists to perform in the Alliance Theater’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s, Into the
Woods. Following this performance, he was appointed concert master of the Spivey Hall Honor Chamber
Orchestra under conductor Lowell Graham. Later that year, he was named concert master of the DeKalb
Youth Symphony Orchestra. DuMarkus lives with the mindset of Live to Give, which led him to begin
teaching violin at Renaissance Learning Center in Atlanta, GA as well as providing private lessons to
young and developing students.
In 2012, DuMarkus, currently a senior in high school, was named a finalist in the Georgia Governor’s
Honors Program, and while there served as concert master of the Honors Program Symphony Orchestra.
In August he returned to the DeKalb Youth Symphony Orchestra for a second term as concert master
and also held this recurring role in the 2012 Spivey Hall Honor Chamber Orchestra under conductor
Alexander Jimenez.
Although 2012 has proven to be an amazing year for DuMarkus, 2013 is showing to be even better.
In February of 2013, DuMarkus will travel to New York to play at the world renowned Carnegie Hall.
He will be performing as a member of the American High School Honors Orchestra, which brings
together students from the United States and Canada to work on music for three days for a culminating
performance in Carnegie Hall.
DuMarkus is truly excited about this trip, as it will be his first time in New York City. To help offset his
trip tuition and travel costs, DuMarkus will be hosting a holiday benefit concert at the Community
Achievement Center located at 4522 Flat Shoals Parkway Decatur, GA 30034 on December 21, 2012 at
6:00PM. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and can be purchased at www.dumarkusd.eventbrite.com
DuMarkus sends special thanks to his parents, sister, Oliver Steiner and Justin Bruns, his former and
current private violin instructors, Jennifer Floyd, the Huthmaker Violins Family, the Ken Ford Foundation,
The Magic Wand Foundation and all of his supporters who constantly push him to be the best he can be.
